The short answer is: it depends on the marble. While marble is naturally formed under intense heat and pressure deep underground, its performance in cold, freezing conditions varies significantly from one variety to another.
Generally speaking, denser, low-porosity marbles—such as Carrara, Statuary, Калакатта, Тасос, and Danby—are considered frost-resistant and can withstand freezing temperatures. Their compact structure limits water absorption, which is the key factor. When water enters a stone‘s pores and freezes, it expands—and that expansion creates internal pressure that can lead to microfracturing, растрескивание, or spalling over time.
Research confirms this: low-porosity marbles (with porosity below 1%) typically demonstrate high resistance to freeze-thaw degradation. Our recommendation: If you’re considering marble for outdoor use in cold climates, choose a dense, low-porosity variety and ensure it‘s properly sealed. Avoid highly porous or heavily veined marbles for exterior applications where frost is a concern. And always consult your supplier about the specific marble’s frost resistance test results (such as EN 12371 standards) before committing to an outdoor project.
