What are the varieties of slate?

Slate isn’t a one-size-fits-all stone—it comes in a remarkable range of colors, textures, and compositions, each with its own character and best uses.

By color. The most common way to classify slate is by its color, which depends on the minerals present during formation. Carbon-rich slates yield deep blacks and charcoals. Iron oxide produces warm reds, rusts, and purples. Chlorite gives you greens—from pale sage to deep forest. You’ll also find grey, blue-grey, marrón, and multi-colored varieties. This palette makes slate incredibly versatile for everything from flooring to feature walls.

By composition. Geologically, slate can be classified as argillaceous (clay-based), carbonaceous, calcareous, or siliceous. These differences affect hardness, durabilidad, and how the stone weathers over time.

By finish and application. In the commercial market, you’ll also hear terms likeroofing slate (selected for low water absorption and frost resistance), flooring slate (often gauged for consistent thickness), ycladding slate (valued for its natural cleft texture). Finishes range from natural cleft to honed, pulido, or tumbled.
